Nel doppio volume Hugh Hencken, Tarquinia, Villanovans and Early Etruscans, Cambridge MA, 1968 trovo una placchetta aurea di ca. 3,5 cm. proveniente da Monterozzi, tomba di Bocchoris, (fig. 361 a) Inv. RA 2064 del Museo di Tarquinia al tempo peduta (L'avranno poi trovata?
). "On it was a woman between two sphinxes, an outspokenly oriental form" (pag. 367). Nella discussione a pag. 590 Hencken afferma: "
The goddess between spinxes. This scene appears on a gold plaque from the Bocchoris Tomb. It represents the Mistress of Beasts, a very old form in the art of the Near East wich later passed into the orientalizing art of Greece" e più avanti, a pag. 591 l'autore mette in relazione la placchetta con gli avori di Nimrud (tardo IX - VIII secolo) nonché con una placca bronzea da Olimpia con la rappresentazione di Artemide alata. "Thus, while the goddess between the sphinxes from the Bocchoris Tomb has Greek connections, the concept of the Mistress of Beasts reaches back to the Asiatic mainland."
La tomba viene datata da Hencken al "period III" che a suo avviso inizia per Tarquinia nel 700 a.C. Rappresentazioni di sfingi più antiche non ne ho trovate.
Quanto qui riportato confermerebbe quindi l'intervento di Cerebia.
